Nailsworth C.E. (C) Primary School

Tudors at War!

Nearly 100 children were involved in Tudor Warfare at Nailsworth Primary as battle broke out on the playground as part of history studies.
Authentic costumes, pikes, muskets, swords and armour all helped to make the experience feel real as the children charged across the playground towards the enemy: their frightened teachers!
The experience rounded off a whole day of activities led by Tudor Expert, Bob Leedham. Bob, who owns a company called Tudor Times, worked for 20 years as props-master at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, but has more recently turned his expertise towards creating historical experiences for groups of children. Children from Years 3, 5 and 6 at the school were able to handle tudor artefacts including weapons, household items and clothing. They also heard about the exploits of Henry VII, VIII and Queens Elizabeth and Mary. But it was in the final battle when history really came to life for the children as they were drilled in marching and pike wielding!
Luckily a full complement of staff survived to carry on their topic work in history with a new and exciting edge!
