SCHOOL BUCKS TREND WITH RISING NUMBERS

09:00 - 23 January 2007

Staff at Nailsworth Primary School say its rising number of pupils is bucking a national trend. The roll at the school has swelled by a further 35 new children.

And headteacher Chris Raymond, who took up his post 18 months ago, said he was delighted.

"Following the drop in numbers over the last 10 years, I am delighted that numbers have been rising at Nailsworth Primary over the last two."

The Office of National Statistics has blamed a falling birth rate and factors like the lack of affordable homes for young families for the overall decline.

But in Nailsworth 21 children joined the reception class at the start of the autumn term and a further 14 joined further up the school.

The school has a recently restructured governing body and has introduced incentives for pupils to gain recognition and enjoyment through hard work.

They include an arts evening, sports dinner, talent competition and the introduction of a reward system for individual and team work.

Mr Raymond said: "While we can boast fantastic facilities, we are also committed to providing children with an educational journey that will be both progressive and fun.

"Our investment in the arts and sport suggests we want to provide children with opportunities to shine."

Mr Raymond said he also felt his policy of involving parents as much as possible in the school had paid enormous dividends.

"I would like to think of us as a vibrant, community school that values the contributions of all involved," he said.

Nailsworth Primary School has recently enjoyed substantial refurbishment after part of its school field was sold for the new Forest Green Rovers football stadium development.

It has also benefited from a windfall of new housing, and therefore new families, next door to its site.
